Mid-Year Leadership Check-In: Are You Leading with Intention?

As we reach the midpoint of the year, many leaders find themselves asking the same question:

"Am I intentionally leading my team, or am I simply reacting to whatever comes next?"

The pace of business rarely slows down. Meetings fill our calendars, priorities shift, and before long we're operating on autopilot instead of leading with purpose. That's why a mid-year leadership check-in is so valuable. It provides an opportunity to pause, reflect, recalibrate, and ensure your daily actions still align with the vision you set at the beginning of the year.

Intentional

The second half of the year doesn't have to be a continuation of the first. It can be your strongest six months yet.

Step One: Check In With Yourself

Great leadership begins with self-awareness. Before evaluating your team, take an honest look in the mirror.

Are You Focused on What Matters Most?

Ask yourself:

  • Am I leading with intention or spending most of my time putting out fires?

  • Are the goals I established in January still the right goals today?

  • What are the three to five "Vital Few" priorities that will create the greatest impact over the next 90 days?

The most effective leaders understand that everything cannot be a priority. Clarity creates focus, and focus produces results.

Evaluate Your Habits

Our habits shape our leadership more than our intentions.

Consider these questions:

  • Does my calendar reflect what I value most?

  • Am I protecting my energy so I can lead at my best?

  • Have I become a bottleneck by holding onto work I should be delegating?

Leadership isn't about doing everything yourself. It's about creating an environment where others can succeed.

Assess Your Leadership Impact

Leadership is measured by the impact we have on others.

Reflect on questions like:

  • Am I providing meaningful feedback and recognition?

  • Does my team understand where we're going and why it matters?

  • When was the last time someone on my team changed my perspective because I truly listened?

Strong leaders don't simply communicate—they create conversations that build trust and engagement.

Finally, challenge yourself to summarize your focus for the remainder of the year in just a few words.

What are the one to three words that define your leadership vision for the next six months?

That simple phrase can become your daily reminder of what matters most.

Step Two: Check In With Your Team

Once you've reflected on your own leadership, it's time to invest in your people.

A thoughtful mid-year conversation demonstrates that you value your employees beyond their performance metrics. These conversations strengthen relationships, uncover obstacles, and often reignite motivation.

Here are a few powerful questions to guide your one-on-one discussions.

Priorities & Goal Alignment

Ask:

  • Looking back over the first half of the year, what accomplishment are you most proud of?

  • If you could remove one project from your workload to focus on what matters most, what would it be?

  • Do you have the tools, resources, and direction you need to be successful during the next six months?

Energy & Well-Being

Understanding how your people are doing personally is just as important as understanding how they're performing professionally.

Ask:

  • On a scale of 1–10, how would you rate your current workload and stress level?

  • What is draining your energy the most right now?

  • What part of your work has been giving you the most energy or excitement?

These conversations often uncover opportunities to improve engagement before burnout becomes a problem.

Growth & Support

Great employees want to continue growing.

Ask:

  • What skills would you like to develop during the remainder of the year?

  • What can I start doing, stop doing, or continue doing to better support your success?

  • What's the biggest obstacle standing in the way of your best work?

Sometimes the greatest gift a leader can provide is removing barriers instead of adding more responsibilities.

Three Tips for a Successful Mid-Year Conversation

To make these conversations meaningful:

1.Share the questions in advance. Giving employees two or three days to reflect leads to deeper, more thoughtful discussions.

2. Listen more than you talk. Aim to spend about 80% of the conversation listening and only 20% speaking.

3. Leave with action. End every meeting by identifying one or two specific commitments for both the leader and the employee.

Finish the Year Strong

The midpoint of the year is more than a date on the calendar—it's an opportunity.

An opportunity to refocus.

To reconnect.

To recommit to the leader you want to be and the culture you want to create.

Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about intentionally creating an environment where people can do their best work and continue growing.

Take the time to check in with yourself. Then take the time to check in with your people.

You may discover that one intentional conversation today becomes the catalyst for your team's strongest finish yet.
