Motivating and Engaging Your Team: The Power of Praise, Power & Purpose
What Truly Motivates your Employees?
It sounds like a simple question, but the answer can be surprisingly complex. What motivates one team member may have little impact on another. That’s why, before launching a new recognition program, incentive, or employee engagement initiative, one of the most important things a leader can do is ask and listen.
Organizations can invest significant time, energy, and resources into programs designed to improve morale—only to discover they have little impact because they don’t align with what employees actually value.
If you’re looking for ways to better understand what motivates and engages your team, consider starting conversations around three important areas: Praise, Power, and Purpose.
1. Praise: How Do I Want to Be Recognized?
Recognition matters—but how you recognize someone matters just as much.
Some employees enjoy being recognized publicly during a team meeting or company event. Others would much rather receive a personal note, a quick thank-you, or a private conversation with their leader.
Effective recognition is not necessarily about doing more. It’s about knowing your people well enough to make recognition meaningful.
Ask your team: What type of recognition is most meaningful to you?
2. Power: Where Can I Have Ownership?
Employees who report high levels of job satisfaction often describe having a sense of ownership and autonomy in their work.
They want clear expectations, but they also want appropriate freedom to determine how they accomplish their goals, solve problems, and make decisions.
Leaders can strengthen engagement by looking for opportunities to move beyond simply assigning tasks and instead empowering employees to take greater ownership.
Ask yourself: Where can I give my team more opportunity to make decisions, solve problems, and take ownership?
3. Purpose: Why Does My Work Matter?
People want to know that what they do matters.
Purpose comes from understanding how an individual role connects to the larger team, organization, customer, or community. Employees are more likely to feel engaged when they can see the connection between their daily work and the organization’s bigger picture.
Leaders play an important role in making that connection visible.
Ask your team: Do you understand how your work contributes to our overall success—and why it matters?
Start by Listening
There is no single recognition program, incentive, or engagement strategy that will motivate everyone. The better starting point is to understand your people.
Ask. Listen. Learn. Then act.
